The early morning Arizona sun hid behind the rain cloud, casting a soft glow over Annie and LJ’s backyard.  Normally, it was a busy place with birds, bugs, and butterflies enjoying its fruits and contributing to its well-being. However, it was unusually quiet; the quail suddenly darted into the prickly pear cactus to hide, and the roadrunner’s legs were a blur as it sprinted for the safety of the far wall. With a feline grace that belied its power, the bobcat descended, paws lightly touching down on the earth. Its amber eyes scanned the terrain; hunger etched into every sinew. This desert phantom was seeking its next meal.

The young bobcat didn’t notice the quail and focused on the orange remnants on the ground left behind by the woodpeckers, having enjoyed their nourishment.

Minutes stretched as the bobcat circled the remnants. Its whiskers twitched, nostrils flaring, searching for the scent of prey. But too bad, there was nothing here for it—no plump quail, no speedy roadrunner. Only the bitter tang of old half-eaten oranges.

So, with a disdainful flick of its tail, the bobcat gave one last glance at the yard, and then it vanished over the wall, leaving behind only the echo of its silent hunger.

“I know just how you feel,” thought Annie as she watched the entire event from her kitchen window.

The sound of the front door opening and closing and the sounds of Samara Joy’s Can’t Get Out of This Mood shook Annie out of her musing.

LJ walked into the kitchen and immediately noticed her gloom. “What’s the matter, babes?”

Annie shook her head as though to shake off her mood. “I just watched the bobcat searching our backyard for food and leaving in a huff after not finding anything delectable. It reminded me how my meals lately have been uninspiring and blah.”

“I appreciate everything you make, so I’m not complaining, but we can fix this. How about adding some tangy and savory sauces to spice things up? Remember that Tahini dressing we had at the Patel’s the last time we were at their farm? The ingredients consisted of tahini, lemon juice, and garlic. Tahini provides healthy fats, calcium, and iron. Lemon and garlic boost flavor and provide essential nutrients. It pairs well with kale salads, roasted vegetables, or grain bowls.”

“Thanks, LJ. That’s a good idea,” she said, picking up on his mood. “What do you think about a vibrant green sauce bursting with fresh flavors like Creamy Avocado Cilantro Sauce? We could try it on tacos or roasted veggies. The healthy fat from the avocado, vitamin C from the cilantro, and the lime zest would give the tacos a healthy zesty boost. Plus, the Greek yogurt is yummy for your tummy.”

“Yeah, now that makes me hungry, but let’s keep going. How about Ginger Peanut Sauce: a delish Asian-Inspire sauce that melds savory, sweet, and spicy? Peanuts provide protein and healthy fat, and ginger has anti-inflammatory benefits. We could make Vegan Spring Rolls.”

“Sounds like we’re on a roll, laughed Annie as she handed LJ a glass of fresh-squeezed orange juice. You’re definitely helping lift my spirits. I’m thinking about Cultured Vegan Sour Cream. It’s a healthy alternative to traditional sour cream. The cashews are a source of healthy fat, and the lemon juice or apple cider vinegar gives it the tang. The live probiotics mean this recipe takes longer than usual, but the contribution to gut health is super beneficial. Plus, this sour cream lasts for days with refrigeration.”

“Well, here’s a quick recipe that makes whatever it is used with delicious,” said LJ, sipping his O.J.  “Lemon Herb Vinaigrette is a zesty herb-infused dressing that amps up salads, roasted veggies, or power bowls. Olive oil provides healthy fat, lemon juice, vitamin C, and the herbs and antioxidants we need daily to stay healthy.”

“I’m ready to start cooking because this discussion has been inspiring and made me hungry. Would you like to help me whip up an Easy 1-pot Marinara Sauce? The lycopene, vitamins, and minerals in tomatoes make them nutritious. Plus, the longer we simmer it, the richer the sauce, making it perfect for pasta, pizza, or veggie dishes.”

“I’m hungry too. I’ll get the tomatoes we froze in summer, and we can whip up a meal in about 30 minutes. How are you feeling now?” LJ asked thoughtfully.

“Much better.”
